NIHR BioResource Logo

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) BioResource is a national recallable health resource with a mission to help scientific discoveries move more quickly from the lab to the patient.

Since 2007, we have recruited more than 250,000 volunteers who have participated in more than 300 health research studies in academia, the NHS and industry. There are currently 18 local BioResource Centres across England, each connected to the corresponding local Biomedical Resource Centre, also an NIHR-supported infrastructure.

BioResource volunteers provide samples and access to health records and questionnaires to help researchers better understand how genetics and environment impact health. The Rare Disease BioResource volunteers contribute to research in more than 60 disease areas, including immunology, neuroscience, haematology, rheumatology, cardiovascular disease, and many more.

Programmes such as the RNA phenotyping project and the recently launched DNA, Children + Young People’s Health Resource (D-CYPHR) children ages 0-15 aim to better understand how and why rare diseases occur and close the knowledge gap when it comes to under-represented research areas.

Together with health researchers, we are committed to leading research that will benefit everyone.
