Trustee announcement

After twelve wonderful years, our Chair, Nick Sireau, has stepped down from Beacon’s Trustee Board.

Nick co-founded the charity (then known as Findacure) alongside our Vice Chair, Anthony Hall in 2012, and has been instrumental in shaping Beacon’s journey.

We’d like to thank Nick for all his incredible work, guidance and expertise over the years – for us and the wider rare disease community.

“Founding and chairing Beacon for Rare Diseases has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together in advancing support, awareness, and innovation for the rare disease community.

As I step down from my role, I do so with immense gratitude for the remarkable team, dedicated trustees, and the resilient individuals and families we serve.

I remain committed to the cause and am confident Beacon will continue to shine brightly, driving meaningful change in the rare disease landscape.”

We’re delighted to announce that Sophie Costello, a Trustee of Beacon since 2019, has taken over as our new Chair of Trustees.

As we look ahead to 2025, we’re excited to continue our mission of ensuring no one walks their rare journey alone.

Hear from our CEO, Rick Thompson

It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside Nick over the last nine years.

His experience and personal journey in the world of rare diseases is an example to the whole community, and being able to build the strong foundations of the charity with his support has been central to our success.

While it is sad to see him formally leave the charity we wish him lots of luck with his new endeavours, and we know we’ll still see him and benefit from his wisdom informally!

Importantly, we know that we are in really safe hands with Sophie. As the founder and CEO of Costello Medical, Sophie has built a consultancy firm from a handful of clients to a global scale, all with an amazing ethos and a commitment to pro bono projects that is second to none.

Sophie has already been a huge support to Beacon since she became a trustee, nearly six years ago. We are thrilled that she has agreed to chair the board for the foreseeable future.

We know with her help Beacon will continue to mature into an impactful charity, with rare disease patient groups at its heart.
