Beacon is excited to announce our upcoming workshop for rare disease patient groups! This introductory training is designed for rare leaders without a finance background who are looking to learn the essentials of managing their rare disease charity’s finances.


Why attend this workshop?

Managing finances is a huge part of running a charity. It can be incredibly time-consuming and ensuring you adhere to the legal levels of compliance can be worrisome for leaders who may not have previous experience in this area.
Our workshop is designed to make financial management more approachable, equipping you with practical tools and clear guidance to manage your charity’s finances confidently and effectively.

What will the workshop cover?
Spread across three sessions, this interactive workshop will provide a comprehensive guide to the essential elements to consider when managing charity finances.

Session 1: 27th November 2024, 10:30am – 12:30pm
Navigating the legal requirements
Learn the importance of managing the legal and operational side of your charity’s finances.
We will cover:
- An introduction to the role of finance in charities, including the legal and governance requirements.
- Understanding what constitutes an effective finance function, recognising the different roles within that function, and ensuring clear communication by addressing jargon.
- Exploration of the terminology and tools of risk management, what you are required to do for compliance purposes and how you can make risk management work for your organisation.
Session 2: 28th November 2024, 10:30am – 12:30pm
Practical financial planning
This session will equip you with the essential building blocks of financial management.
We will cover:
- An introduction to the principles of budgeting and forecasting, including an exploration of financial management tools and consideration of how to present data effectively.
- Coverage of the legal and best practice position when it comes to reserves, exploration of how you might calculate them and consideration of wider communication issues when it comes to reserves.
Session 3: 29th November 2024, 10:30am – 12:30pm
Understanding financial monitoring
Learn how your financial information is reported to the board, understanding governance responsibilities and communicating with stakeholders.
We will cover:
- The requirements of a trustees’ annual report, considering performance and impact reporting.
- What the Statement of Recommended Practice requires of charities.
- An explanation of the different types of accounts you might encounter, what makes up statutory accounts – how to understand them and areas of interest to users of accounts.

This workshop is tailored toward rare disease charity leaders who do not come from a financial background.
Three interactive sessions will take you through the basics of what you need to know for effective financial management.
They will cover how to navigate the legal and governance requirements and delve into the basics of financial planning and monitoring.
These topics will be covered in an accessible and interactive format to ensure you come away with the tools you need to feel confident overseeing your charities finances.


Meet the trainer!
Caron joined CFG in 2010 from the ICAEW where she was Head of the Charity and Voluntary Sector.
In addition to supporting a number of small charities and community organisations, Caron has been a member of the NCVO’s National Assembly and the Charities SORP Committee.
She has sat on a number of government working parties, is a non-executive director of the Lending Standards Board, a member of the Church of England Pension Board’s Audit and Risk Committee, and former Chair of the Board of the Directory of Social Change.
She was also Chair of her local hockey club. She was named in the top 30 UK social influences in Risk, Compliance and Regtech 2017.

Deposit system
Registering for this online workshop will require paying a refundable deposit of £15 upon registration. This deposit will be kept safe in Eventbrite until after the training has been completed.
Following the event, if you have attended at least two of the three sessions, you will get your full deposit back. We understand that circumstances can change, especially in the rare disease community.
Should you register for the workshop and realise you can no longer attend, please let us know as soon as possible. We will endeavour to refund your deposit in full provided reasonable notice is given. Reasonable notice for this event is no later than 3 working days before.
